List of modules for self-training

Modules for self-training

This page presents the main self-training modules offered on this portal, and provides links that allow you to access them directly.

These self-training modules are in the form of progressive trails across all available resources, with a progression from the basics up to personal activities, some of which can be quite complex.

Generally, the first steps of these modules consist of Diapason sessions that will guide you step by step through your first lessons, and will give you access to detailed oral explanations from the teacher.

Gradually, as your engineering thermodynamics culture and understanding of the discipline will grow, you will become more autonomous, and the modules will direct you to the thematic pages, guidance pages for practical work or other exercises.

Most of the modules listed here are based on a three-step progression, which is detailed in the presentation of the complete module for self-training to energy powered systems, which you should refer to if you want more explanation, because we will not repeat them consistently.

These three steps are:

1) The acquisition of concepts and tools dedicated to reminders on the thermodynamic concepts already seen, studies of the basic cycles, discovery of the technologies used and training in the use of Thermoptim.

2) The reinforcement of the concepts seen during the first step, with theoretical complements on exergy and heat-exchangers, and the study of variants of the basic cycles, of combined cycles and cogeneration

3) The in-depth analyses and the personal applications. leading to the study of innovative and / or more complex cycles than the previous as well as reflections on the prospects for technology when working on mini-projects alone or in groups.

Thermoptim presentation and Getting Started exercises sessions

The purpose of these sessions is to discover Thermoptim and become familiar with its use by modeling simple examples of energy systems (gas turbine, steam power plant, vapor compression refrigeration machine).

Module for self-training to energy powered systems

This pedagogic set dedicated to self-training deals with the energy powered systems based on heat conversion. It stresses with particular emphasis the main types of compressible fluid machines (compressors, internal combustion engines, gas turbines, steam gas turbines, refrigeration machines or facilities, combined cycles, cogeneration).

It will help you:

  • understand the design principles of these systems;
  • have a global view of the various technologies used for their construction;
  • and finally become acquainted with the classical and up-to-date analysis methods (diagrams, charts, software applications, etc.).

This is a general purpose course, divided as we have said in three phases: the first two being mainly made up of Diapason sessions, and the third offering in addition various personal activities.

Thermodynamic conversion of nuclear energy

This module deals particularly with different thermodynamic cycles for producing electricity from today's or future nuclear reactors .

Introduction to global energy problems

This course seeks to provide a basis for thinking on all the global energy problems , providing an analysis of key aspects to consider: energy supply, dependent on resources and available technologies, the macroeconomic implications of energy demand, geopolitical issues, the special situation of developing countries.

Thermodynamic conversion of renewable energies

This module deals particularly with different thermodynamic cycles used to generate electricity from renewable energies :

  • Flat plate or concentration solar collectors
  • Solar ponds
  • Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC)
  • Geothermal energy
  • Biomass

CO2 capture

This module deals particularly with thermodynamic cycles to achieve CO2 capture:

  • AZEP Cycle (Advanced Zero Emission Power)
  • Oxycombustion cycles  (Oxy-fuel, Water cycle, Graz, Matiant, CLC)
  • Capture of CO2 in methanol

Refrigeration cycles

This module deals particularly with various refrigeration cycles:

  • Vapor compression
  • Absorption
  • Reverse Brayton cycle
  • Ejector refrigeration cycles
  • Cryogenics
  • Trigeneration
